Notes:
[p.7] This book seeks ... to record as completely as possible all
aeroplanes which have borne the Avro trademark, together with
something of their technical details and operational histories. ...
New material made available from Avro records has led to the
inclusion of several details which are intentionally at variance with
the author’s “British Civil Aircraft 1919-1959”
[cf. Items 59/2, 60/1 above], and made possible complete listings of
production aircraft. Initial markings alone are quoted except where
subsequent identities are demanded by the story and in the unique
Avro 504K joyriding saga.
[cat.
1973] Contains the most complete history of A.V. Roe’s
early experimental aircraft ever written, and describes in exhaustive
detail all Avro military and civil aircraft, including those built in
Canada, with full data on unbuilt Avro projects. All known Avro 504
variants are fully described. Operational histories of over 70 major
types.

Regrettably my father, A.J. Jackson, did not live to complete a
second edition … However, his notes, including additional text
relating to overseas Avro 504Ks and the Avro 671/Cierva C.30A, and
above all his extensive personal archive have made the task of
updating the book a relatively straightforward one. The archive is
now in the ownership of my elder brother, Squadron Leader D.H.

Reviews:
[Gerald J. Pollinger. Air Pic., June 1965, p.252]
The make-up of this new book … and the similar format Avro
Aircraft Since 1908 by A.J. Jackson from the same publishers at
the same time at the same price, is an interesting one. Whereas
Jackson’s follows the tried and proven formula of an aircraft
per section of several pages … the equally imposing volume by
Lewis … is written more as a continuous prose study. Thus to
find any individual aircraft the index must be consulted. This method
of story-telling is no bad thing, and gets away from the more
stereotyped stylization of the pure reference work. … The
index, with its list of specification numbers in particular is
unusually complete …Lewis has crammed his sentences with
facts, and although his style is a little pedestrian, he has
nevertheless produced yet another worthwhile book which deserves to
be as successful as its hangar-mates.

[p.10] In preparing this revised edition … it would have
given me the greatest pleasure to have been able to extend the volume
to some degree by being able to record the advent of some striking
new fighters from our designers. … The Lightning and the
P.1127 now constitute the main activity in the design of the
indigenous British fighter and details and photographs of both have
been brought up-to-date in this edition.

cat.] The first of a new kind of aviation history, covering
the whole evolution, from earliest beginnings to the present day, of
all British aircraft types dedicated to one specific role. The result
is a fascinating study, carefully documented and generously
illustrated. Here are the great names of two World Wars: Camel, S.E.5
and Pup; Hurricane, Spitfire and Mosquito. Here also are the names of
the men who gave the R.F.C., R.N.A.S. and R.A.F. leadership in
military aviation for half a century: de Havilland, Folland, Mitchell
and Sir Sydney Camm.

1974-75] ... The history describes all categories of fighter,
from the early gun-carriers and scouts of the R.F.C. and R.N.A.S.,
through the colourful biplanes of the inter-war period, into the era
of the monoplane in its drab camouflage, with such types as the
Spitfire and the Hurricane playing a vital part in the Battle of
Britain, and on the amazing, polished creations of the supersonic
age. Many unfinished projects which contributed to the development of
the fighter as a weapon are also recorded.

[p.10] Research prior to the publication of the third edition …
in 1974 disclosed the drastic … reduction in the customary
prodigious activity displayed in British fighter design … The
progression of this extremely grave situation has been confirmed in
the course of the ensuing five years, the solitary example of
continued development of a British-conceived first-line fighter …
being that of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier … Recorded also is
the conception of the Hawker Siddeley HS.1182 Hawk as a fighter for
export …

which he drew in compiling this history.
